A hydrocele (HI-droe-seel) is a swelling in the scrotum that occurs when fluid collects in the thin sheath around the testicle. Hydrocele is very common in newborns and usually disappears without treatment at 1 year of age. Older boys and adult males may develop hydrocele due to inflammation or injury within the scrotu.
Hydrocele is usually not painful or harmful and may not require any treatment. But if you have a scrotal swelling, please see a doctor to rule out other causes.
